Sine City
The San Marcos Creek Specific Plan represents an effort to create a downtown for San Marcos. The plan outlines planning framework for future growth and redevelopment of the approximately 214-acre area along San Marcos Creek. The Specific Plan, which has been developed with a thorough analysis of environmental conditions and input from City decision-makers, landowners, neighbors and the community-at-large, provides a comprehensive vision for the downtown Creek District along with goals, policies and development standards to guide future public and private actions relating to the area's development and conservation of open space and natural resources.
The purpose our "Sine City" project is too integrate what we are learning in our math classrooms into real world situations. Using the San Marcos Creek Specific Plan as our framework for our projects. We integrated the building codes of the SMCSP into our urban planning stages, architecture, and digital/technical designs.

In my group of four we at first divided each position of surveyor, engineer, digital design artist, and architect evenly, but in the end we each contributed to every position in one way or another. The easiest stage of this project for us was the actual land survey, that was portion was very structured and straight to the point when it was assigned. When it finally came down to integrating the building codes and deciding the type of building we had trouble narrowing down one design concept.
As a group we are utilizing the fact that our plot of land is located in two different building code areas, Bent Avenue center and West End/ Midtown. Our building will be combination of the both the BAC and WME building regulations. In the WME zone there is permitted residential buildings while in the BAC there is only permitted residential on non ground levels. So stay within code regulations our building itself will have a total of 3 levels; 2 commercial and 1 residential. As a team we have decided to maximize our plot land to the max and will include above ground parking. Going off of the form based code for the city of San Marcos we in both BAC and WME building zones we are limited to 3 parking facilities each.
In our design we have incorporated the golden ratio into our courtyard design. Our courtyard will include a fountain and modern take of ancient architecture.
We will take inspiration from the ancient Hanging Gardens of Babylon and include some aspects of modern day hanging gardens. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. These gardens were believed to have been an estimated 80ft high and featured elaborate terraces and floating plants. We would like to implement these type of exterior garden design into our building because not only can it provide a sound proof barrier, but in a hypothetical sense it raises the real estate value due to its aesthetics.

One of the biggest takeaways from the project would have to be the amount of work it takes to put a building concept together and the execution of the concept. My father works alongside the city of San Diego's civil and structural engineers and building inspectors all the time, so I had been exposed to much of the technical language and concepts used throughout the project. By the end, I had much greater appreciation for what civil engineers, surveyors, and architects do for our community.
When it came to the design phases of this project we my group had trouble because of the amount of creative freedom we had. Most of the time me and another group member would agree on most things while the other remaining two questioned or disagreed. But with a little compromise and revisions we always came to an agreement.

Exhibition night was a great way to wrap up this final math project. The energy in the room the nigh of was very positive and the students were very excited for their project showcase. Many parents were very excited to see all our hard work and hear about our experiences throughout this project. Since the basis of the "Sine City" project was very close to home for a majority of students. many parents had some knowledge about the San Marcos Creekside project but once they left exhibition I know they had gained more knowledge to the Creekside project and a personal connection.
